Helping Preteens Find Purpose at VBS
Summer is in full swing, and for many churches that means one thing…VBS. When it comes to VBS at most preteens are in limbo, too old to be participants and too young to serve. Even if they are counted as participants, they may feel “too cool”. So, what are you supposed to do with preteens during VBS?
Preteens CAN serve as leaders in your VBS, you just need to set them up for success. How do you do that? First, find the right roles for them. Second, equip them by training them properly.
What are the right roles for preteens? There is not a “one size fits all” role for all your preteens. Here are three roles that preteens can serve in:
Mature preteens as junior counselors:
Your preteens who are responsible and caring are perfect candidates to serve as junior counselors in 1st or 2nd graders, serving alongside an adult or teen leader. They are great because they are responsible and caring for your kids.
- Equip junior counselors by showing them how to lead discussions and how to handle difficult campers.
Eager students as worker bees:
Some preteens are excited to serve but don’t have the discernment or maturity to be put in charge of a group. These are primed to be put to work. You can put them on a snack team or help your games crew set up.
- Equip worker bees by having someone older who will patiently focus their energy to the task at hand. Make sure they have directions and tasks that are easy to follow. Even better if there is a predictable schedule for the week.
Introverted students as tech helpers:
I’ve found that many of our introverted kids are great when you put them behind the scenes. They will thrive when they have a very specific task like running slides or a camera.
- Equip your tech helpers by showing them how to use equipment beforehand so they are comfortable and can practice during rehearsals. Also, have open lines of communication during the program so they can ask questions when they need help.
In Conclusion
VBS is a great opportunity to get your preteens in the right roles and equip them. Show them they have a place in God’s kingdom and cast a vision for their membership in the Body of Christ.
