New Year, New Preteen Ministry

As we begin the New Year, it’s natural to look forward to what you’d like to see accomplished in your preteen ministry this coming year or semester. Thinking about everything you’d like to grow in your ministry can be overwhelming. The key to effective preteen ministry is focusing on only a few things. I love this quote from my Executive Pastor, Bill, “Nothing becomes dynamic until it becomes specific.” This means that the more specific a goal is, the more power it has.

Here are a couple of categories of goals to help you focus:

1. Head Goals

What is ONE thing you’d want your preteens to KNOW when they finish this semester? Do you want them to know that God is faithful even when others aren’t? Maybe you’d like them to be able to recite the books of the New Testament. You could even desire your preteens to be able to articulate the Gospel clearly. Remember that this will take repetition throughout the semester.

2. Heart Goals

What is one thing you’d want your preteens to BELIEVE, DEEPLY, or FEEL? Do you want every student to feel that they are created in God’s image and, therefore, valuable in God’s eyes? Maybe you want new attendees to feel welcomed into the church. It could be as simple as them feeling a sense of community in the group.

3. Hands Goals

What is one thing you want your preteens to be able to do this semester? Do you want them to be able to find any verse in the Bible? Do you want to equip them to pray and have a personal devotional time? Maybe you want to equip them to serve others who are less fortunate.

These categories are helpful because they give me focus. After identifying a few goals, try making them more dynamic by making them specific.

  • Less Specific Goal — I want my preteens to feel like they have a community.
  • More Specific Goal — I want every preteen to know the names and schools of every person in their small group.

You see how having a specific goal makes it more attainable and actionable. Specific goals make it easier for preteens to understand.

Conclusion:

My prayer is that your preteen ministry will see growth this coming year and that God will give you the vision to prepare for that growth.
