The Leadership Shortage Starts Earlier Than You Think
After over two decades in ministry, I’ve seen a troubling trend: a growing gap between vacant ministry positions and qualified candidates. Most churches lack a leadership pipeline, often relying on leaders from outside rather than cultivating their own from within.
Ephesians 4:11-12 calls us to equip the saints to do the work of ministry—starting even with our preteens. It takes vision, patience, and intentionality to create a leadership pipeline that begins with preteens.
YOU NEED VISION to show preteens they can become church leaders—without that, they’ll assume they can’t.
YOU NEED VISION to inspire other adults and church leadership to invest in preteens and give them opportunities to lead.
YOU NEED PATIENCE to bring this vision to life. As one youth ministry leader said, ‘Success comes from staying long enough to see it.’ It takes time to watch preteens grow into small group leaders, camp counselors and future Church leaders.
YOU NEED INTENTIONALITY to make the most of every week. You can’t assume preteen leaders will emerge on their own—every week is a chance to equip them with skills to lead now and in the future.
3 Simple Ways to Start Developing Preteen Leaders This Week
Here are three easy ways you can begin a leadership pipeline in your preteen ministry THIS WEEK:
- Let students read Scripture or pray aloud to build confidence in spiritual leadership. This helps them to become comfortable leading others spiritually.
- Craft simple small group questions preteens can ask, encouraging them to guide discussions. Preteens may not have the knowledge to teach their peers, you can set up the environment where they get used to leading others in spiritual conversations.
- During activities, let preteens lead groups independently, seeking adult advice only as needed. They can ask adults for wisdom and advice, but let your preteens figure it out on their own. Even if they don’t come up with the right answers, you can guide them after the activity.
Start the Pipeline. Shape the Future.
Will your preteens grow up knowing God calls them to kingdom work, paid or unpaid? If that’s your goal, stay committed—start now.
