“More Than We Can Handle” from the True-ish series

Main Passages:
2 Corinthians 1:3–11

Lesson Takeaway:
Disciples of Christ depend on God more than themselves.

Total Length:
45–60 minutes
(includes teaching, games, activities, discussion, prayer)

Background & Context:
Paul helped plant the church in Corinth and led the body there for over a year (Acts 18:1–18). In his absence,
the church struggled and faced some significant issues. Despite the severe difficulties Paul was facing himself (2 Cor. 1:8–9), his purpose for writing to his friends in Corinth was to encourage them. The Greek word for comfort or encouragement is used 29 times throughout Paul’s letter.1 This truly reveals that Paul’s hope was not in his circumstances but in Christ.

About the True-ish Series

“True-ish” is an 8-week series in the Apologetics Root that focuses on some statements that are commonly believed to be biblical, but aren’t. It’s important that we don’t mishandle the Word of God. If we are going to say, “Well, the Bible says…,” then the Bible better say it. We also need to know the difference between truth and half-truths.

Eric Ballard

I grew up in Mississippi but now call Texas home, where I live with my beautiful wife, Kandace, and two daughters, Kya and Bailey. I have nearly 20 years of youth ministry under my belt, so producing resources that help youth pastors disciple students is a dream job for me. Besides the LORD and my family, my greatest love is the Mississippi State Bulldogs, where I attended college for too many years. Because of an illustrious soccer career that was cut too short, most nights, I still sit by the phone waiting for the Houston Dynamo to finally call me up.
