Deep Discipleship Preteens Year 5: A Clear Strategy for Building Lasting Faith

There’s a moment coming for every preteen in your ministry.

A moment where they begin asking bigger questions.
A moment where faith starts becoming personal.
A moment where they decide if church is just something they attend… or something that shapes who they are.

That’s why preteen ministry matters so much.

Not because it’s a “bridge” ministry.
Not because it fills the gap between kids ministry and youth ministry.

But because preteens are already forming beliefs, habits, identity, and worldview right now.

And the challenge for many churches isn’t a lack of passion.

It’s a lack of clarity.

Too many ministries are jumping from topic to topic, searching for the next fun series, the next event, or the next lesson idea—while unintentionally leaving gaps in discipleship.

That’s exactly why we created Deep Discipleship Preteens Year 5.

What Is Deep Discipleship Preteens?

Deep Discipleship Preteens is a year-long preteen ministry curriculum and discipleship strategy designed to help churches build lasting faith in students before they enter middle school.

Instead of disconnected lessons, Deep Discipleship provides:

  • A complete year of teaching
  • A clear discipleship pathway
  • Parent partnership tools
  • Volunteer development resources
  • Leadership opportunities for students
  • Intentional programming support

Everything works together to help churches move from simply running programs to building a disciple-making culture.

Why Preteen Ministry Needs a Strong Foundation

Preteens are asking real questions:

  • Who am I?
  • Why does God matter?
  • Can I trust the Bible?
  • Where do I belong?
  • What does following Jesus actually look like?

If we don’t intentionally help students build a biblical foundation during these years, they often enter middle school with fragmented faith.

That’s why Year 5 is built around the 8 Roots of the Gospel.

These roots help students develop a full-picture understanding of Scripture and discipleship over time.

The 8 Roots include:

  • Rescue
  • Kingdom
  • Knowledge
  • Worship
  • Identity
  • Apologetics
  • Outreach
  • Community

Instead of “random-topic ministry,” churches can create a clear, repeatable discipleship pathway that builds confidence for leaders, parents, and students alike.

The goal isn’t simply to make ministry easier.

The goal is to help churches disciple students with greater intentionality.

More Than Lessons: Building a Discipleship Culture

One of the biggest mistakes churches make is treating curriculum like isolated content.

Deep Discipleship was designed differently.

Year 5 helps align:

  • Teaching
  • Volunteers
  • Parents
  • Programming
  • Leadership development

This creates consistency and reinforcement throughout the ministry.

When volunteers understand the discipleship strategy, they move from classroom management to mentorship.

When parents know what students are learning, discipleship continues at home.

When students are given opportunities to lead, they begin internalizing what they believe.

Everything works together.

That alignment is where long-term growth happens.

Helping Volunteers Become Disciple-Makers

Many preteen ministries rely on faithful volunteers who love students deeply—but often feel under-equipped.

That’s why Deep Discipleship includes:

  • Volunteer training
  • Leadership development tools
  • Mentor resources
  • Practical discipleship guides
  • End-of-year encouragement tools

Healthy discipleship cultures are built through relationships.

And relationships grow when leaders feel confident and supported.

Partnering with Parents Matters

Parents are one of the biggest influences in a preteen’s spiritual life.

But many parents want help knowing where to start.

Deep Discipleship Preteens includes tools designed to make discipleship at home more natural and approachable, including:

  • Family Nights
  • Faith at Home resources
  • Drive Time Discipleship Cards
  • Parent communication guides

And with Deep Discipleship Adults, churches can now help parents grow alongside their students using the same passages and discipleship framework.

That creates a powerful opportunity for intergenerational discipleship.

A Better Way Forward for Preteen Ministry

Preteen ministry doesn’t need more noise.

It needs clarity.

It needs intentionality.

It needs a discipleship strategy that helps students build a faith strong enough to last beyond elementary ministry and into the real challenges ahead.

That’s the heart behind Deep Discipleship Preteens Year 5.

Not just more lessons.
Not just more events.

A clearer path forward.

Doug Franklin

Doug Franklin is the president of LeaderTreks, an innovative leadership development organization focusing on students and youth workers. Doug and his wife, Angie, live in West Chicago, Illinois. They don’t have any kids, but they have 2 dogs that think they are children. Diesel and Penelope are Weimaraners who never leave their side. Doug grew up in Illinois and graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Christian Education. He started in youth ministry as a adult volunteer, leading a small group of junior high boys. The experience shaped the way Doug thinks about youth ministry and how students learn. After spending six years as a volunteer, Doug become the full-time high school youth pastor at a church in Wheaton, Illinois. He served as a youth pastor for 12 years in various churches. As Doug thought about what was really working in youth ministry, he came to the conclusion that everything becomes more effective when students lead. So in 1994, Doug started LeaderTreks to partner with youth workers to help them develop their students as leaders. In 2003 LeaderTreks added leadership training for youth workers. It started with five youth workers coming to LeaderTreks for intense training and grew into LeaderTreks’ Refuel Retreats. Doug understands that being a youth worker requires us to lead students, adult volunteers, parents, and church leaders. He wants to help youth workers lead well and to see them become more effective for the purpose of helping students love God.
